When we are very young – like “tween” age – we get these career ideas into our heads – I wanted to run a record company and have a big office in the city with a window overlooking the city streets and cool music acts coming in all the time. I imagined a big plush office with large windows like I saw on TV. The city – of course – being New York. Since I was writing songs I guess I thought that running a record company would be for me. In some respects I was not far off – I have a large window in my office – it does look out on the street – but it is in a commercial building that we own and not on the top of a skyscraper. I do run a company – and it is a creative job – but I am not making records for a living. I do still write songs – but I do it now because I simply cannot stop and I seem to do it for fun. It is a form of therapy to write anything in my opinion. But the point is that I never would have seen this career coming. I never drew well as a child – but when the Mac was introduced to me and I started playing around with fonts – something inside of me lit up. When I finally got a COLOR mac – something bigger lit up. And when I started to work in illustrator – I was all in. Then when I started focusing on custom playing cards I was completely and irrevocably hooked. Something in this career I have fallen into has synced my life into place and I have loved my work every day since. If it is a labor of love is it still “labor”? Personally I think it is way less labor and a lot more love.
I have a new client – Groovy Careers – and she is in the life coaching business. I could speak for hours about the benefits of life coaching. The act of ALMOST hiring my very first life coach actually had such a positive impact on my life that it actually stopped me from trying to sell my business prematurely and in the end it helped me to build Ad Magic to where it is today. I now have some wonderful people in my life who do this type of coaching for me in one way or another – so I know how rewarding it can be.
Our new client Groovy Careers has developed a set of career playing cards to help young people and not so young people – pick their career based on their likes and strengths. Her classroom set features a full color printed box with foam insert and their “backpack” version will feature a more compact box that students can simply throw into their backpacks to use in class or on the go.
The set consists of 150 cards split into three categories: Interests, Skills and Workplace Qualities.
The client can sort interests, skills and workplace qualities into unlimited combinations. In this way they can actually invent and determine careers and job choices that will make them happy and satisfy their interests and workplace needs. Included with the cards are exercises suited to both individuals and groups. Each month groovy careers will post new exercises on their website – www.groovycareers.com to use with the card sets in order to help clients learn even more about what career they would do well to pursue. The Groovy Careers cards can help you to find the job you’ll love.
