Ad Man – a cool custom card game about advertising  - THIS IS A GAME YOU CAN BACK RIGHT NOW BY GOING TO KICKSTARTER!

Ad-Man! is a card game about  advertising mascots. Playing the role of an advertising executive, players use 60 different original mascots to gain over 30 different product accounts from clients, to sell things like soda pop, baseball teams, and fabric detergent. The winner of the game has collected the most product accounts.

I love great looking and well designed art, but most of all  - I REALLY LOVE A GAME THAT IS NOT SO DIFFICULT I CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT!!  

We do a lot of prototypes for kickstarter – especially prototype card games for kickstarter  – and honestly from what I have seen – I think that this art is awesome and it simply looks like fun!  Designer Steve Robbins has an amazing amount of talent.

This game not only has great art but it is a really PLAYABLE game. Of course that is – after all – the whole idea.  You don’t just want to look at the game – you have to be able to figure out how to play it – and figure it out before everyone loses interest!!

Whether they know it or not – and whether they care to admit it or not – Everyone – deep down –  loves advertising mascots!   Not only are they are a great piece of American iconic imagery -(true American icons like Mr Clean and the Lucky Charm Leprechaun are hard to forget after all), they provide us with a shared visual language that is easy to understand. They’re eye-catching – persuasive and very charming.  Remember Darren Stevens from Bewitched!! He was the ultimate Ad Man!!  and I remember wanting to be the female version of Darren Stevens for my entire childhood.  I think that this game might satisfy that urge LOL – even though I DO own an advertising agency – Ad Magic – at this point! Technically we specialize in custom playing cards – custom games and custom promotional items and NOT exactly designing custom Ad Man type campaigns like Darren Stevens did!!  But it is very close to my original childhood dream and I am so very lucky.   Not only do I really love what I do with an amazing passion, but I love it so much that I am even blogging about one of my clients on Mother’s Day!!

Speaking of which I need to get dressed.  I am being taken out for the day.  Back this project – there are lots of great levels and the game will be a blast to play!!

1. Among the Sleep

We can identify with that feeling there’s a monster in the closet waiting to come after us. How many times did you hide under the covers knowing that certain danger awaited and the only protection was your blanket? Among the Sleep is a horror adventure capitalizing on this fear. LaserTag for James Bond, not Robocop may be an odd name for a game, but we definitely see the potential. Instead of going full body armor for a game of LaserTag with your friends or frat brothers/sorority sisters, this allows for a more covert operation. Basically, you wear the sensor under your everyday clothes or in your shirt pocket. Guns are effective from one to 20 feet, but they, too, promise discretion, so no fear of being arrested. All you really need is an infrared light that oscillates at 38kHz. (A remote control will work just fine, according to the Kickstarter project page.) Play in coffee shops, supermarkets, classrooms, and campus centers. Your move, creep!

3. Jagged Alliance: Flashback

Jagged Alliance: Flashback is a tactical, turn-based 3D experience that returns the classic series to its roots on platforms that include Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. In other words, there isn’t an excuse to keep from jumping on board if Cold War action and espionage is your thing. The development team has worked on a dense roster of hit games including Watchmen: The End Is Nigh, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Teramyyd Earthsphere is a turn-based fantasy and adventure board game for two to six players. The object: you either battle sky pirates or become one. Pillage and plunder, or serve and protect — it’s all up to you. The game has some pretty cool piece designs including dragons, ships, and the gorgeous sky city of Aeriopolis. While you’ve still got some time to invest, the campaign has already earned four times its $20,000 goal, so it doesn’t need your investment to become a reality, but we’re pretty certain the gang at IO Worlds would appreciate it.

RatRace Board Game is for the introvert in all of us. Half-calendar, half-game, it allows you to make a three-dimensional cutout of yourself and then slog through the work week on a decorative board that represents the current month. With a different card for all 12 months, mini-3D-you can traverse across important events, picking up rewards on your way to slay the month’s dragon, which could symbolize anything from a test to a presentation at work — basically, any major challenge that you have to overcome. The concept of A Small Favor is a little Han Solo-esque, which we really dig. In the game, you are an alien assassin on the run from a slimeball gangster (think Jabba the Hut). The game is a DRM-free, 2D side-scrolling adventure that allows you to play on PC and MAC. We really like the fun, bare bones storyline, and the graphics are the right mix of old school and fresh. The development team behind it is ClickShake Games, and they’re reportedly working on mobile versions that will be available later for Android and iOS at an unspecified date.

Based on the short story by best-selling author Neil Gaiman, A Study in Emerald is a beautifully designed board game. With a look from renowned designer Martin Wallace, the contest sets players in an alternate reality where the Old Ones reign supreme, and where agents like Sherlock Holmes and arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty are used as pawns in a constantly evolving story of intrigue and horror.

Japan’s epic shooting game trilogy The Tale of ALLTYNEX has finally come to the United States in an English language version. The best comparison we can make for Nyu Media Ltd’s masterpiece is that it looks like arcade favorite Galaga on steroids. Personally – I do not invent games – I am an expert at printing them – Ad Magic has been a kickstarter game printer for over 3 years – but there are 5 basic reasons you might want to try your hand at inventing a game:

Most of our clients are now inventors.  In the past we had a few custom card games and custom board games come along – in between the demand for corporate promotional playing cards and poker chips – but there were not as many inventors as there are now. The advent of Kickstarter has made it possible for people with a dream and no money to FUND their dream – see if people like their idea and develop a client base all at the same time – and in a short period of time. Although you can run it longer – most kickstarter programs run for 30 days. In 30 days time you can actually redetermine the path of your life, readjust your goals and develop a product line and client / fan base for your ideas.  I love the concept and really admire people who have an idea and run with it – so it is an honor to work with them.  I look forward to assisting more projects in the future and to seeing many more games get off the ground running.  If you are inventor – just remember – perseverance pays.  Keep trying until you hit.

Here is a cool custom card game project that we at Ad Magic – as an experienced kickstarter printer – are creating for one of our coolest clients Max Tempkin  - someone who is very very experienced in creating winning campaigns

Werewolf is a game initially based on the game Mafia – which was invented in 1986  by Dimitry Davidoff.  In 1997 Andrew Plotkin recreated the game in the form of Werewolf.  Since 1997 the custom card game has become popular with Nerds at events like gaming trade shows and tech conventions. An elegant ad challenging game – Werewolf consists of 20 custom playing cards printed on standard poker size cards 2.5 x 3.5 in a custom printed fabric zipper case with key tag attachment so they can easily be carried anywhere. Max Temkin – the creator of this Kickstarter project – actually launched it live at PAX where the panel consisted of decision makers from kickstarter.  His project was approved and funded within minutes  - showing newbies and experienced kickstarters alike how it became the fastest funded project in kickstarter history.  The presentation was excellent – and a photo of it can be seen here.  If you want to fund it and get a deck – simply go to Kickstarter and back this Werewolf custom playing card project.

I always ask but I hardly ever GET pictures of how our clients are using their custom playing cards.  In this case I was VERY pleasantly surprised when Meghan from New River sent me this great photo!  I think that this is a very nice way that one of our clients is using the playing cards we manufactured for them.  It is actually a nice thank you as well.

Custom Playing Cards for Rehab

My name is Meghan and I am the RN/Community Relations Coordinator and I work on the Acute Inpatient Rehab Unit at New River Medical Center in Monticello, MN. We take care of patients that have had strokes, brain injuries or illnesses that need physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech therapy. I recently ordered some playing cards with our name and logo on them from Ad Magic. They turned out perfectly! Shari was so helpful and so patient with my MANY questions! We gave away some of our cards at our recent Rehab Reunion party where many of our patients came back to show us how they were doing and they were a HIT! We will also be using them on our unit in patient therapies for activities that promote dexterity, cognitive development and socialization.

It isn’t every day that we get calls to print decks for famous people – although it is getting a little more common to tell you the truth.  This time we got a call from a company in LA that does PR and in this case they were doing a brand new launch of a POP CHIP flavor. Turns out that Katy Perry is a BIG fan of Kettle Corn flavor – and so POP CHIPS created a Kettle Corn Flavor in Katy’s honor AND in her favorite colors of Pink and Purple!!  These colors made for an amazing looking custom playing cards deck and even MORE amazing looking custom poker chips.

The launch of the new POP CHIP flavor was held at a casino type party – and the coolest thing is in this video for the Katy Perry Kettle Corn Launch - you can see her holding the playing cards we printed for the event.

Almost as cool as meeting her.  Well – not nearly – but pretty cool.

Giveaways can be a great idea for generating web traffic, attracting interest in your product, and growing your brand. And, generally speaking, the more creative they are, the better. 1. Tampa Bay Rays Giveaway (June 29, 2012) – Don Zimmer Teddy Bear

Nothing says “bizarre” like witnessing your child cuddle up to a teddy bear with Don Zimmer’s face on it. The Tampa Bay Rays tried out this idea on June 29, 2012, in a game against the Detroit Tigers. The “Zim” Bear may not have been enough to pack in a sell-out crowd, but it has since become a popular image search online for wacky baseball enthusiasts and those who are trying to control their overactive libidos.

2a. Macabre (1958 Film) – Insurance Policy for “Death by Fright”

Director William Castle forged a reputation in Hollywood as being one of the greatest showmen around – a P.T. Barnum of schlock horror movies, if you will (and those flicks were actually pretty good, for the most part). Macabre is one such example. We could tell you what it’s about, but we’re not talking about horror movies here. We’re talking about awesome promotional items, and here’s a great one if you can still find it: an insurance policy for “death by fright.” That’s right, the movie studio actually guaranteed a $1,000 payout should you die by fright during a showing of Macabre. To our knowledge, no one ever collected.

2b. Homicidal (1961 Film) – For Cowards Only, Money Back Guarantee!

Psycho contemporary has a little bit in common with the Hitchcock classic in its tale of a murderous young woman and her cruel brother. But the real story upon its release was the ticking clock at the end that gave frightened patrons a chance to leave if they were too scared. There was also this “For Cowards Only, Money Back Guarantee!” Ah, that William Castle, at it again!

3. Trojan Condoms (December and August 2012) – Boston and New York Vibrator Giveaways

Leave it to Trojan’s Pleasure Cart to do the job your significant other should be doing, ladies! The Pleasure Cart was strategically crafted like a hot dog cart and rolled out onto the streets of Boston, where hundreds lined up on a Monday morning in December to get a piece of the action. In August, the company ran the same promotion for New Yorkers, pushing 10,000 vibrators on the public before all was done. Beats pregnancy, we suppose. No word on how many the Boston promotion moved.

4. Tourism BC (May 17, 2012) – Giant Vending Machine Giveaway

This giveaway may not have been comprised of the most bizarre items we’ve ever seen, but the means for conveying said items sure was! Typically you go to a vending machine to grab a Coke and a bag of Combos, not to make off with a bicycle or kayak. Well, Tourism BC must have gotten their wires crossed. In May 2012, they set up the behemoth you see in the picture in the middle of San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza. We expect tourists from California will inundate British Columbia in 2013.

5. Cards Against Humanity (Christmas Season 2012) – Holiday Pack Expansion Set

Cards Against Humanity, makers of the now legendary card game, unleashed 30 brand new cards covering the holiday season – Kwanzaa, Christmas, and so forth – during Christmas 2012, and they did it in the way only CAH can. Thousands of holiday packs of this hilariously offensive game found their way to thousands of lucky homes just in time for Old St. Nick or Krampas or whoever. Each package cost CAH about $3 (shipping and all), but the company allowed users to decide how much they would pay. For those who chose the freebie route, CAH had a message: “Thanks, a**hole.”

6. St. Paul Saints (May 27, 2006 / July 23, 2011 / May 25, 2008) – Assorted Giveaways

One day they will write a book – if they haven’t already – about the crazy things the St. Paul Saints minor league baseball team has given away at their home games. Pictured here you will find the Anthony Weiner Roast Boxer Shorts to commemorate National Hot Dog Day (July 23, 2011); the Larry Craig Bobblefoot – shake it and the toe taps under the bathroom stall door – which celebrated accusations toward Sen. Larry Craig from a police officer claiming Craig tried to play footsie with him in a public restroom stall (May 25, 2008); and the Minnetonka Queen Bath Toy, which marked allegations toward Minnesota Vikings players Daunte Culpepper, Moe Williams, Fred Smoot and Bryant McKinnie, for indecent conduct aboard ship charters for a local boat service (May 27, 2006). Bill Murray is part owner in the team if that explains anything.

7. Bad Robot (Christmas 2012) – Pancake Kit Giveaway

Here is a unique, feel-good item from the guy responsible for breathing new life into Captain Kirk and Crew. J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot wanted to do something nice for the troops during Christmas 2012, and what’s nicer than pancakes!? The pancake mold is in the shape of the Bad Robot logo. The rest of the kit contains an apron, pancake mix, Yum syrup, a tattoo, a recipe book and a lot more, all packaged in a convenient toolkit box.

8. Style Bizarre (Oct. 2, 2012) – Waist Censure / Body Harness Giveaway

We’ve always heard that the waist censure is supposed to go on the inside of the garment, but Nuit Clothing has other ideas. Last Halloween season, to celebrate the gothic fashion scene, Style Bizarre teamed with Nuit to give away this combination waist censure / body harness that you’re supposed to wear on the outside of your clothes. Ah, these crazy kids today!

9. Papa John’s (December 13, 2010 – check the Monday after Sunday’s game) – 10 Free Toppings Giveaway

A Papa John’s in our nation’s capital was obviously reaching the point of despair for creativity when they decided on this bizarre fiasco. While Redskins fans were having difficulty finding something to cheer about during the 2010 season, the pizza chain decided to give away 10 free toppings in honor of running back Ryan Torain’s 121 first-quarter yards. First of all, really? How random is that! Secondly, and this is where the promotional item gets pretty bizarre, who has ever eaten a pizza with 10 toppings on it? We didn’t even know there were that many to choose from, but then it can be difficult when you equate the word “topping” with “meat.”

10. BIZARRE and Rimmel (Sept. 11, 2011) – Signed Union Jack Guitar Giveaway

The terms “rock star” and “musical genius” are probably not what come to mind when you hear mention of British model Kate Moss. So how was it that in September 2011, BIZARRE and Rimmel teamed up to give away a Union Jack guitar signed by Ms. Moss herself? Isn’t that sort of like the samurai sword signed by Randy Jackson that Will Ferrell was so proud of in Step Brothers? Oh well, it may not make sense, but it doesn’t have to. We probably wouldn’t turn down either one.

11. The Freebies Blog (Oct. 18, 2011) – Chocolates with Movie Stars Giveaway

Chocolate is awesome, but we’ve been burned one too many times by Valentine’s Day candy boxes that house what appears to be a lovely looking truffle until you take a bite and end up with a mouthful of some kind of disgusting jello mold. Nevertheless, this little giveaway from The Freebies Blog in October 2011 would be a welcome addition to the pantry. Even if there are only three good pieces of chocolate on the inside, you can celebrate two of the big screen’s loveliest ladies looking their best on the covers. Random, yes, but great for any home theater!

12. Reading Phillies (Aug. 3, 2010) – Ryan Howard Garden Gnome Giveaway

First, Don Zimmer Teddy Bears, now Ryan Howard Garden Gnomes. What is it with baseball teams and their desire to turn their managers and players into weird mutant fantasy creatures? On Aug. 3, 2010, the first 2,500 fans to show up to the ballpark in Reading, Pa., earned the obvious bragging rights that go along with owning a creepy bearded gnome version of your favorite baseball player. Not quite as high up on the wet-your-pants scare factor scale as Zim Bear, but still nothing you want to end up alone with in a dark room.

13. Namco Bandai (February 2010) – Muscle March Fake Protein and Underoos Giveaway

The Namco Bandai really got in to their Muscle March game that allowed players to simulate what it was like to be a bodybuilder and fitness juggernaut without actually having to attend a weight room. To help further the fantasy, they provided a fake protein supplement canister and a pair of skin-tight underoos. It’s uncertain why the syringe and deer antler spray ideas weren’t included. Maybe the Muscle March logo wouldn’t fit?

14. Stupid.com and That’s Nerdilicious (October 2010) – Crazy Halloween Candy Giveaway

Candy giveaways on Halloween may not seem like such a bizarre promotional idea – after all, millions of houses across America give away candy each year under the pretense of trick-or-treat – but when you consider what the candy in this October 2010 promotion from Stupid.com and That’s Nerdilicious actually is, another story starts to emerge. No Nestle Crunch or Take 5 bars here, kids, but you will get Zombie Blood, Gummy Eyeballs and Urine Candy. Yum! (Don’t worry, it’s not really zombie blood, gummy eyeballs and urine – at least, we don’t think.)

15. Noisey and Action Bronson (December 2012) – G-Pens Giveaway (for Your Weed)

Weed smoking isn’t nearly as Reefer Madness faux pas as it used to be. If it was, would Mr. Action Bronson himself – his Christian name – have teamed with Noisey in December 2012 to give away G-Pen vaporizers that are meant for that very purpose? With more and more Americans opening up to the idea of “legalizing it,” these products of concealment may no longer be necessary in a few years, but until then, those so inclined can puff-puff-pass much easier with the G-Pen.

 The press release is due out Tuesday or Wednesday – but the basic idea is that you go on the site – and build a deck with pics of your family or a logo for your business or whatever and each deck made donates $1.50 to the cause of your choice that is listed on the site.  The non -profit organizations get a free landing page on the site – which costs them nothing – and all they need to do to promote the landing page is hand out flyers or inexpensive business cards with the landing page on it.  Or they can just pass it around on their social media outlets.  So for example – customcarddecks.com/savethemustangs would go to the non profit trying to save the mustang horses.
