Personalized Playing cards for Celebrities
I have to admit that brushes with fame – as I like to think of them – are definitely one of the percs of this job. I will never forget the time we made custom poker chips for Slash to give to a friend of his for a present – or designing the chips and personalized playing cards that Drew Barrymore gave to Justin Long. Ridiculously – when they broke up that first time – I remember hoping fervently that my chip design had nothing to do with it – and kept reassuring myself that he loved the present. When we made cards of Mark Mothersbaugh’s artwork — (the genius behind Devo and half the music you hear in TV and Movies today) I got to go to lunch with him in California –a nice organic restaurant which is right up my alley anyway – and I remember thinking how utterly comfortable the whole day with him was. He has a cool circular green building on Hollywood Blvd on one of those roads in LA that have a ton of traffic on them – that used to be some kind of doctor’s 0ffice back in the day – but now is a world class recording studio. I have a picture of it below. Being a musician and songwriter myself – I have to tell you I was eating that whole thing up. Cool job percs. Or the free broadway show tickets to see the show BEFORE it even opened! That was awesome. We have a show in Vegas that we do cards for too – so – y0u guessed it – when I went to Vegas I got comps to that show too and we wound up sitting next to the new lead singer for the Temptations. Most orders are for regular people though and one of my favorites was just this morning. I was speaking to Tom – who was 70 recently- and he is putting together a reunion whose theme is “still paying with a full deck”. They are each going to have a full deck of cards with just their picture on all 54 cards and one pip – say the ace of spades. Then they will exchange cards at the reunion until they all collect a full playable deck – in essence giving away all but one of their own cards and collecting the 53 others – thereby having to connect with each of the other 53 people there. Once I figured out how to make that happen for him he was simply tickled – and he made me feel like a hero or a celebrity myself. I got a real laugh from that idea – still playing with a full deck. I love this job – did I mention that? It may not all be celebrities – and it is certainly not all that glamourous most of the time – but I am definitely connecting with some pretty sharp people every day, and for that I am truly grateful.
